Gratitude

I’m five years old, by mamma’s side
First day of school, I want to hide
I start to cry, so afraid of this day
She whispers to me “you’ll be ok”

So many years now she’s been gone
I can still hear that melody
A lullaby she sang every night just for me

If I could go to one day back in time
I’d walk up to her on that school line
I’d thank her for all her kindness and care
For all of her love – she always was there

I’m fifteen, a marathon race
A finish line – a blistering pace
Later on - my legs cramp from the strain
My father’s strong hands relieve the pain

One by one, the months became years
I wish there was more we could do
So many things about him I wish I knew

If I could go to one day back in time
I’d walk up to him on that finish line
I’d thank him for all of his guidance and care
In his quiet way - he was there

I’m forty-five – my son’s soccer game
My father’s here - I’m glad he came
He remembers the day it was me dribbling the ball so furiously
Later on, for the one hundredth time I say “ please move near us – you’re so alone”
He smiles and says, “Thanks but I’m staying here in my home”

Mother and Father I honor your lives
I see how you fought, how you survived
Through war and through struggle that I never knew
With deep gratitude I bow down to you

We didn’t always see things the same way
But still you came through at the end of the day

Mother and Father you gave me my life
With deep gratitude, I now live it right

So many changes, so many faces, you were both there at the start
Love now surrounds me, fortune has found me
You’re forever here in my heart

Mother and father I honor your lives
I see how you fought, and how you survived
Through war and through struggle that I never knew
With deep gratitude I bow down to you

We didn’t always see things the same way
But you still came through-at the end of the day

Mother and Father you gave me my life
With deep gratitude I now live it right
Mother and father you gave me my life
With deep gratitude I now live it right
Mother and Father you gave me my life
With deep gratitude I walk through the night

Mother and Father you gave me my life
With deep gratitude I enter the light…

I’m ninety five-how old I’ve grown- I sit by the fire- I’m alone
I listen to the wind in the trees
The forest still holds my memories
It was a great life, oh what a show
But when it’s time- I will go
I forever will cherish two people who walked before me….

If I could still hold you, one last time I’d tell you
Thanks for all you did for me…..
